Although not an original idea, Donkey Kong became famous for popularizing platformers in 1981 following a similar game titled Space Panic (1980). Keep in mind, this refers to standing arcade cabinets. Later Donkey Kong Jr. (1982) and Mario Bros. (1983) helped Nintendo transition from arcade cabinets to consoles! They released the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) also in 1983. Later second-generation consoles like the Sega Genesis, Super NES, and a few years later Playstation improved on platform games with titles like Super Mario World (1990), Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), and Crash Bandicoot (1996).
