Hi all – We are very proud to be able to bring back this video. We had to temporarily remove it due to a few complaints over me (Mr. O) breathing in helium from a balloon at the start and then again right before I issued the warning, which may, to some, be seen as promoting the abuse of inhalents and/or unsafe practices. We have corrected these issues and I apologize for giving this impression. When we made this video, it was right after the Balloon Boy incident. I was quite surprised how much the media went crazy over this, esp. since it was obvious that the “Jiffy Pop” balloon shown could NEVER have held an 8 year old aloft. I am quite proud of the first responders who did not wait to consider this, but rather reacted with the belief that a child was at risk. That is the sort of response we want to see – act to save a child in danger, then later decide whether or not it is a hoax. Thanks to them for all that they do for us. Enjoy the video! P.S. – Please remember that while helium is non-toxic, it is not oxygen. We need oxygen to survive. Breathing in too much helium will start to limit the amount of oxygen going to your brain and other parts of your body, potentially resulting in you passing out from oxygen deprivation. Also, NEVER breath helium straight out of a tank. The gas in that case is under great pressure and can cause a pneumothorax, which is a VERY serious condition.

Fifth grade students at Webster, Castle and Richardson elementary schools are participating in STARBASE, a program that develops and utilizes their skills in science, technology, engineering and math. The students spend a week engineering a mission to Mars. STARBASE Minnesota is a non-profit organization that provides free, hands-on STEM programs to students. The premise of our book, The Alpha Strategies, Understanding Strategy, Risk, and Values in Any Organization, is that 8 strategies are common to all organizations from for-profits to nonprofits to government organizations. We define strategy as a course of action and our research tells us there are 8 choices all organizations must make. These findings are based on a fresh reading of Henri Fayol's General and Industrial Management, in which Fayol lists 6 of these 8 strategies on the first page of his book, arguably the first book written on the subject of the modern discipline of strategic management. Peter Drucker identifies 2 more of the 8 in his famous work, The Practice of Management, written in 1954. The 8 are: Business Definition/Mandate, Growth, Risk, Financial Management, R&D/Technology, Organization Management, Marketing/Sales | Communications, and Service Delivery - which is also known as Production or Manufacturing depending on the nature of the business. These 8 strategies must be understood because they represent the 8 categories of strategy found in every organization. It is problematic to undertake strategic planning without understanding current strategy; being, all of the 8. Strategy cannot be changed without a solid understanding of current strategy. The 8 strategies are the source of all organization design and the expectations which will drive the implementation of subsequent strategy planning to implement their intent.
