I visited South Korea last April 2012 and these are some of the clips which I took during my trip and journey round the country. U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Ted N. Branch, commander Carrier Strike Group 1, visits Ponte-E-Raquettes, Haiti, Jan. 22, 2010, a village where water was handed out by sailors from the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). Carrier Strike Group 1 and the Bunker Hill are conducting humanitarian and disaster relief operation as part of Operation Unified Response after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake caused severe damage in Haiti Jan. 12.

Within days after the worst earthquake in Haiti, Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C. answered the call and steamed down to help the people there.

The MV-22 Osprey attached to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit debuted in its very first humanitarian mission Sunday in Haiti. Lance Cpl. Nicholas Neighbors has the details.

"Where do we go from here" was the question asked at the second Mass Strategy Meeting held on May 30th at Troy Davis Park in Atlanta, Ga. A coalition of progressive organizations has formed in Atlanta and their main goal is to go on the offensive, both legislatively and in local communities, to build a more just society based on Human Rights. About 50 to 60 people attended this meeting and began creating a framework to provide food, housing, health care, education transportation and a good job to the people of Atlanta who are being ignored by the local power structure. This film covers the beginning of the Mass Strategy Meeting and the report back from the food/sustainability committee. It runs 68 minutes.

Concepted and directed the kick-off spectacle and music video for World Humanitarian Day (WHD) 2012 in collaboration with the United Nations and Beyonce. The process involved projection-mapping the UN General Assembly Hall by implementing the largest indoor concave projection screen ever created. This surface served as an animated backdrop for a live performance of Beyonce’s “I Was Here,” the adopted anthem of WHD. The Super Mirror is an application of motion-capture technology that uses a Kinect camera to record ballet positions (also called “poses”), capture live motion, and show the difference between the two. ‘Dee’, the humanoid robot is the protagonist of the film. Dee is short for DX-168 (Scientific Name). It is also short for ‘didi’ which means elder sister in India. Though many people in the village now rely on Dee to solve a lot of their problems, there are also people who are suspicious of her. They cannot relate to an android even though Dee physically looks like them. Thus, this natural human tendency of not being able to accept change immediately is portrayed in this manner. The idea of humanizing technology is the theme of this movie through Dee’s character. The researchers of today are aiming to humanize technology, they want as intuitive a interface as possible between man and the machine. The ultimate aim of converting human-computer interaction to human-human interaction has been envisioned here. The title ‘one degree of Separation’ denotes how technology can shrink the world and enhance our knowledge base. The idea is to show “how technology can help solve the problems of education and child health” under a situation which is envisioned by the researchers.

Spring/Summer 2014 season - Homo Consommatus points out the problem provoked by the process of globalization – human addiction to social networks1 as Tweeter, Facebook, Instagram and etc. Nowadays art and fashion reflect this phenomena precisely - runway show photos are becoming public before being presented by media. Globalized world is an interesting place for cultural producers to work. New media represents a constantly shifting frontier for experimentation and exploration. One of the dominant aesthetics in contemporary art of mid 1990s (in the broad sense, rather than focusing on individual academism of trends and styles) was the so-called digital art. This aesthetic has identified a number of cultural phenomena and, in particular, the modern look of the mass culture. Post-Digital Aesthetics is the result of immersion to the environment, filled with digital technology: noise of computer fans and laser printers, unexpected screen glitches4 . Precise, it originated from the error and defects of digital technology, clicks, bugs and program errors which became the source material for artists. ''Failure (error) determines the evolution, perfection does not require any improvement''. - Colson Whitehead The idea of ''GLITCH' became a core for Homo Consommatus S/S 2014 collection and was presented in both technical and philosophical aspects: the invention of new textile as unexpected mixing of textures, artisanal embroidery, hot press gluing, hand stitching and an interpretation of those as symbolic intertwined social wires holding humans hostages and depriving them from inner freedom and individuality.

Program Overview: A small group of non-profits were asked by the State of Alaska Division of Public Health, the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education, and the Anchorage Municipality to create a series of videos on emergency preparedness. The videos are signed in American Sign Language (ASL), captioned, and voiced in order to be the most accessible possible. About our groups: Access Alaska is a private, non-profit, consumer-controlled organization that provides independent living services to people who experience a disability. As an Independent Living Center, our mission is to encourage and promote the total integration of people who experience a disability to live independently in the community of their choice. Through our assistance and support individuals with disabilities can identify and obtain needed services in an effort to maintain their independence as opposed to living in an institution. Access Alaska was formed in 1983 to serve the Anchorage area. Services were later expanded in 1984 and 1998 when offices in were opened in Fairbanks and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Assistive Technology of Alaska (ATLA) is Alaska’s only comprehensive assistive technology (AT) resource center. AT can be the key to greater independence and productivity for people in their home, school, community, and/or place of employment. ATLA provides demonstrations, information, and device loans to help Alaskans make informed decisions and select the AT that best meets their needs. ATLA is a nonprofit organization specializing in assessments, assistive technology, and technology training services. We work with government, business, education, health services organizations, and individuals to provide accessible and cost-effective technology solutions to promote independent living and success. The Bridges Navigator Program provides a range of resources and services to Deaf & Hard of Hearing Alaskans to improve long-term employment and housing options. It is run by Alyeska Vocational Services through funding provided by Alaska DHSS. Alyeska Vocational Services is dedicated to providing outstanding quality services that result in successful community involvement & employment. The delivery of this water drill will provide new hope to the families of the 3.75 million people that die and the nearly 1 billion who suffer every day from scarce and contaminated water. The Village Drill: This new technology was created by the founders of WHOlives.org and was developed by University engineers. The drill is designed to drill a 6” borehole up to 250 feet deep, accessing the deep and clean water that exists nearly everywhere in the world, even the arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. Once the borehole is complete and the well pump is attached a village instantly has the lifesaving water that will be the start of their rise from poverty. The Village Drill will drill 1 meter every 3 minutes in most soils. It will also penetrate soft to mid- medium grade rock. Most groups talk about scarce and contaminated water, we did something about it.

Since then, his family has received no official explanation for his detention or information regarding his whereabouts. However, his family has recently learned from previous detainees at the security branch of Kafer Sousa, Damascus, that Bassel is being held at this location. Bassel Khartabil, a Palestinian-Syrian, 31, is a respected computer engineer specializing in open source software development, the type of contributions the Internet is built upon. He launched his career ten years ago in Syria, working as a technical director for a number of local companies on cultural projects like restoring Palmyra and Forward Syria Magazine. Since then, Bassel has become known worldwide for his strong commitment to the open web, teaching others about technology, and contributing his experience freely to help the world. Bassel is the project leader for an open source web software called Aiki Framework. He is well known in online technical communities as a dedicated volunteer to major Internet projects like Creative Commons (creativecommons.org), Mozilla Firefox (mozilla.org), Wikipedia (wikipedia.org), Open Clip Art Library (openclipart.org), Fabricatorz (fabricatorz.com), and Sharism (sharism.org). Since his arrest, Bassel’s valuable volunteer work, both in Syria and around the world, has been stopped. His absence has been painful for the communities that depend on him. In addition, his family, and his fiancée whom he was due to marry this past April, have had their lives put on hold. Bassel Khartabil has been unjustly detained for many months without trial or any legal charges being brought against him. We, the signees of the #FREEBASSEL campaign, demand immediate information regarding his detention, health, and psychological state. We urge the Syrian Government to release the community member, husband, son to a mother and father, and celebrated International software engineer Bassel Khartabil, immediately.

Every year, for 10 years, we have been helping the local chapter of the American Red Cross to produce a fund-raiser that gives tribute to everyday heroes. This year was the 10th anniversary of the Red Cross Heroes Breakfast. This year's Enduring Hero - the person selected for his or her legacy of selfless contributions to others - was Dr. Richard Wylie, the President of Endicott College. This is the video we produced in tribute to his dedication to community. Dawn Marie Corneau was the co-chair of this year's 10th Anniversary event - in a new, larger venue with a commitment to achieving aggressive new development goals for the Red Cross. In Dawn Marie's e-mail to us, she said, "Well, the feedback has been great!! Sponsors, table sponsors and attendees really thought the event was very polished and still very personal. I know there might have been a few errors, but I do not believe that the audience noticed or cared. We are up 25% from last year's numbers. It's about humans being cultural animals. What is different between us and the other animals is, we use language and we invent categories, and then we live inside our language. We live in a meaning system, and our food is part of that meaning system. Yes, it is also energy that we need to eat, but nobody just eats the energy that is around, they eat certain kinds and some of it is good food and some of it is bad food. Everybody culturalizes food, food is very important for people. Human institutions are all like that: It's the built-in stuff that you take for granted, that's built in in language and culture. Food is part of that, but money is a great example of it. Money is this amazing magic thing that works because we believe in it. And you can tell that it's that way, because sometimes it doesn't work. If they print too much of it or something, then it stops working. The library is an institution, the university is an institution. These are humanly invented organizational structures and taken-for-granted things that allow us to live in the way that we do. This is what human culture is about: it's the creation of a bunch of stuff, the invention of a bunch of stuff that then becomes almost invisible, because you take it for granted. But it works. So in the modern world we live in a world which is very institutional, but humans always lived like that. Even nomadic hunter-gatherers lived in an institutional world. The institution they lived in was kinship. But kinship among humans is an institution, it's not really natural. It's what it is defined to be. It's a bunch of words and categories in which I am an uncle or a son or a grandfather or something and that tells me what it is I am supposed to do. I know what a good grandfather is, I'm trying to be a good grandfather, and it's whatever my culture defines a grandfather to be. That's what I'm trying to be. So kinship is an institution, the economy is a bunch of institutions, the polity is a bunch of institutions, religion is an institution, and this is the world in which we live. What human socio-cultural evolution is, is the change in institutions, but institutions change slowly. But it's mainly social movements that change them. People have a new idea. They usually formulate the new idea as some reshuffle of a bunch of old ideas, and they give it a new label. And then they all run around and do something like the Protestant Reformation and change a bunch of stuff. That is how institutions change, that is how they have always changed. It's not new. Social movements in that sense have been around all along. They change in other ways. New technologies change institutions, because the institutions have to adapt. If you have a new technology like the internet, people invent ways of dealing with it. You have to protect yourself or you go crazy, you have too much information flow so you have to control it. Everybody has psychological limits, and then we invent ways that help ourselves to do that and then those ways spread. So there is a new institutional adaptation to technology. That has always happened when new technologies come along. There are other things that change institutions besides social movements, but anyway, they do change and they do evolve. And that's the thing that I study, that evolution.

I'm hoping that it will help us make more effective decisions. The decision-making process that we have now is a very direct response to the problem that the people who make the decisions can't possibly know enough to make competent decisions. That's in fact how the structure of corporations was created right from the very beginning, from the invention of the corporation. It was designed explicitly as a way of filtering information up to the top, and filtering it at each step it gets reduced, and so you have somebody who is at the top of a corporation that's way larger than what anybody ever dreamed of in the 1860s, when corporations were invented to manage nationwide railroads, now they're managing corporations like GE, where the CEO is making decisions about the toaster division, the nuclear reactor division, the television news division, the pharmaceuticals, the investing division, an insane set of businesses, each with its own deep complexity, and one person at the top is supposed to be making decisions about all of them. There's nobody who can possibly know enough to make those decisions. You just can't. And so when we see things really scale up on the net, as we do with Wikipedia or some of the large collaborative projects like Linux and Debian and the like, the decision making changes, and rather than thinking, oh, we'll find one person who's smart enough to make decisions, no, we have a network, let's do this in a networked way. And what are networks good at? Well, if a decision can be kept local, the person who knows most about the thing is the person who is dealing with it every day, the local decision. And when it's too hard or has too many effects, then let's spread this out throughout the network through discussion and through argument, and let's come up with new ways, which are in fact being invented, that allow in some cases a vote, or in some cases require consensus. Or in the case of the IETF, which is responsible for much of the technology of the internet, they hum. At an IETF meeting, to signify assent, everybody hums. Why do they hum? Probably because it's a little quirky, we'll start with that, but also because you can't tell who's humming and who isn't, so people are more free to express their genuine feelings without feeling the social pressure to go one way or another. And also, it makes a really nice noise that expresses the consensus. Now I'm not saying this is the only way networks can make decisions, but when you have a new environment, a new network, a new infrastructure that can scale in a way the old can't, you do want to see innovative new ways of making decisions that take advantage of it.

When it comes to genocide, it's a sort of breeding. It's negative eugenics. You subtract the people you don't want. Who ‘you’ is, is up for question, but this has gone on throughout the ages, in the name of war, in the name of social hygiene. But no we have something where we can start to add. This is called positive eugenics. That's double good. Sounds like 1984, right? Double-good genics. Eu-eugenics. And positive eugenics means you are not taking away people that are less than human, you’re making people that are more than human. Extrahuman, superhuman. Adding genes to make superhumans implies that the people that are not superfit through technology will eventually die off, because they're not as fit. But it’s not as cruel as making them die. You just let them wilt away. So it’s a different kind of eugenics. It's posed like things like human enhancement, human optimisation, human advancement. I talked to a scientist who prefers not to be named and I said: ‘What do you think about human enhancement?’ And he said: ‘Well, we’re not going anywhere now.’ My feeling is that love, lust, abandon, have guided diversity for a long time, and to a great degree there is a movement in science, quietly or not so quietly, towards letting reason or rationality take over where love left of. So the rationalization of our heredity. And I’m not sure what I think about that. Actually, I trust lust. I trust lust more then reason myself. I would like a cure for AIDS, I would like a cure for diabetes, I would like a cure for cystic fibrosis and Fragile X. Gene therapy is working on it. But the places that I look at are gene therapy, fertility centres and human embryonic stem cell engineering, when these come together again. So this is something that got divided earlier in our history. Genetic engineering, animal husbandry and family planning were divided when eugenics supposedly fell apart. They're now coming back together, so we are animals, we are being husband and wife-ized, not just through family planning, but through genetic engineering. And it's happening at the hospital, during gene therapy trials with human subjects, it's happening in fertility centres, especially non-state sponsored fertility centres, and it’s happening, how do I say, the genes that put into human embryonic stem cells happen to be the genes that will also work with human embryos in fertility centres. So if we bring these three technologies together, we find that we are already working on ourselves. I know, because I talk to people. I’ll go to a hospital and I’ll talk to Recombinant Safety, in charge of human subjects in gene therapy, and I say: ‘What are you worried about? Are you worried about this thing going airborne?’ Because they put a virus in someone’s arm and try to cure their pancreatic cancer. And they say: ‘Well, we do quarantine people for a week. We’re afraid of viral shedding. If they get a clod and it’s similar to the adino virus that we knocked out and added our gene to, it’s weakened, but if it gets on a real cold it can go airborne. So we quarantine them. And we also tend to use women that are postmenopausal, but we ask them to take a birth control pill.’ They’re so scared that people are going to get pregnant during a gene therapy trial, because then a transgenic human would be born, which means the technology's there, but the public's not ready. And so they don't want to do anything to upset the apple cart right now. But I can tell you, science is always fifty years ahead and the technology is here, so there are little astronauts about three or four years old ready to go to Mars in ten years. They’re going to send them. So they already made those Mars travellers. No normal human can go on that Mars mission in 2018. So they're in.

First I'll try to describe it. Solar Zebrafish is a very small portion of a very large grant, which is called ‘Towards Biosolar Cells’. But I consider these fish to be single solar cells. What we are doing is injecting isolated chloroplast into the embryos of zebrafish, and when they're born as larva we’re going to see if they can photosynthesise solar energy through the chloroplast, which comes from plants, and need less food or no food at all. There are a few other techniques we may use. We may have to add some genes from a sea slug that already keeps those organelles alive and actually lives off of sun energy, so it happens in nature already. But the real questions start to occur around whether or not this is a sustainable way of manufacturing new beings, how do we say, A, we have a vertebrate that's part plant. There's like ten horror films out here, Day of the Triffids, stuff like this that are already like that. Food of the Gods by H.G. Wells, he covered it already. But actually, as for plant-animal mixes, humans in particular are already part vegetable. According to George Bataille, when we stood upright the only thing keeping us from being vegetables is that we forgot to keep our heads up and stare at the sun until we went blind. And then we would be sunflowers. Van Gogh did it, but not everyone’s doing it. But maybe someday it would be nice for the human effect on ecology that people would be unable to produce. They would actually sit in a hammock all day, sunning themselves kind of green and vegging out, is what it’s called. I have some problems with this project, though. I actually don’t think that as we make genetically engineered plant-animal hybrids that photosynthesise and are vertebrates, that it would be good if they escaped en masse. But at the same time, I’m a fan of animal consciousness and I believe in their entitiness, and I think, do they have less worth because we wiggled on them, because we reengineered them? As I say, they may have as much right to drift, even with the poor effect on even human ecology, it’s hard to say. But I did come out with seventeen questions for different people, because I'm not sure about this one. I'm not sure if it’s just, how do they say, whitewashing the issue, or greenwashing the issue. For one thing, bioregional sustainability is not Luddite. It’s using ld technology that is called agriculture and it's based, like culture is based on agriculture. And I've worked as an organic farmer, and I know that, A, the food is better for you, B, it tastes better, and C, it is actually appreciating the cycles of life. Like you pee on the compost pile and you dig it back in. Farming is a gory act, though. It’s a strange thing to say. When you cut a lettuce, it bleeds down your arm. Actually plants like to eat blood and bone.
